The 2012 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, a single-elimination event involving 68 schools, crowned the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. Commencing on March 13, 2012, it culminated in the championship game on April 2 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. The Final Four comprised Kentucky, appearing for the second time under John Calipari, Louisville, also making their second appearance under Rick Pitino and first since 2005, Kansas, returning after winning the 2008 national championship under head coach Bill Self, and Ohio State, making their first appearance since their 2007 runner-up finish and second under coach Thad Matta. Kentucky emerged victorious, defeating Kansas 67-59 to claim their first national championship since 1998 under Tubby Smith. This marked John Calipari's first national championship in four Final Four appearances, having previously reached the Final Four with Kentucky in 2011, Memphis in 2008, and Massachusetts in 1996.
